What You Should Do When You're Feeling Overwhelmed

Life is often fast-paced and can be unforgiving. Stress can pile up in an instant, and leave you feeling overwhelmed by work, school, or pressure from other sources. Here are a few tips to put things in perspective when you feel overwhelmed.

Recognize that You Are Not Alone

You are not alone with stress. A 2015 study conducted by the American Psychological Association revealed several statistics that paint a picture of a very stressed out America. Everyone has to overcome stress and circumstances beyond their control, but they do not have to do it alone. Never be afraid to reach out to others to vent or discuss problems. Not only is it good to get things out in the open, but they might have great advice as well. Family and friends are there for you.

Create a List

If you feel overwhelmed by all of the things you need to do, make a list. Maintaining a list can help you keep track of your tasks, and provide relief every time you cross one out. Order it however you wish; order of importance may be the best way, but ordering tasks by how quickly they can be completed could work just as well.

Make Time for Relief

People can sometimes forget to set aside time for themselves. It can be tough with a busy schedule, but always make time for an activity you enjoy. Outgoing types should look for classes or groups, like yoga or martial arts, where they can get away from societal pressures for a little while with people who enjoy the same things they do. Introverts might look to reading, home fitness, or something as simple as television. Life may feel as though it revolves around work, but only so much as you make it. Schedule some "you time" every day, and let it be your relief.
