There are so many different TV shows to watch. Many are wondering how long the current soap operas will last. While it’s true the soaps of today have a harder time staying on the air, they still have a huge fan base.

History of Soaps

First, let’s get into the history of soaps. According to Ms. Mojo’s YouTube channel, it started in the 1930’s when radios became popular. Many consumers started sponsoring their shows, to market to the stay at home wives and mothers they started daytime serial dramas. As a result, many of the stations had these dramas. In 1939 they were given the name “soap opera” simply because soaps and detergents businesses sponsored so many of them. The first soap opera that made its television debut was Guiding Last in 1952 and is the longest running drama in history. At one time several soap operas ran on the networks ABC, CBS, and NBC. As time went on and networks and shows changed many soaps operas came and went. As of today, there are currently four soap operas still on the air. However many are wondering will these four soaps still be around in the next ten years?Which soap opera is likely to last for the next decade and beyond and which soap opera will end within the next decade depends on what has given these four soaps their current longevity.

General Hospital

According to Thought Co., husband and wife writers, Frank and Doris Hursley created General Hospital in 1963. It’s listed in the Guinness World Records as the longest running American soap opera and the third longest running drama in television. In the 1970’s the soap opera marketed toward a younger audience. They created characters like the super couple Luke and Laura, which changed the face of soaps forever. General Hospital also stands out from the rest for tackling taboo topics such as AIDS, breast cancer, single mothers, rape, and mob storylines.General Hospital is always innovative by targeting new audiences but never forgets its history. As soap operas are coming and going, General Hospital’s legacy speaks for itself and will stand to be around in the next ten years.

Days of Our Lives

According to Today, husband and wife Ted and Betty Corday created Days of Our Lives in 1965. It’s one of the longest running soap operas and focuses on the Horton and the Brady’s. It was given the title of most daring drama for having storylines that no other soap opera would dare cover. These topics include aliens, interracial dating, and artificial insemination. During the soaps prime in 1999-2002, it focused on some of the greatest teen story lines. Days of Our Lives has covered topics of school bullies and the effects it has on its students. However, after other writers took over the show, it took a turn and became very unrealistic with its storylines. Some fans continued to watch and some that saw it as too much of a departure from its original writing.Even though Days of Our Lives is still on the air and remains one of the most watched soap operas, it could very well reach its end in the next ten years.

The Young & the Restless

According to Entertainment Weekly, The Young and the Restless had its television debut in 1973. Lee Philip and William J. Bell created the soap, which initially centered on the lives of the wealthy Brooks and the poor Fosters. Eventually in the 1980’s the storylines shifted due to the show being one hour and many of the actors ended their contracts. The creators were forced to recast, and that’s how the Abbotts and the Newman’s were introduced. The Young and the Restless focused on the feud between Katherine Chancellor and Jill Foster, the love story between Nikki and Victor Newman, and the rivalry between Jack Abbott and Victor Newman. The Young and the Restless has won numerous Daytime Emmys and remains the number one daytime drama.A few years ago The Young and the Restless were among one of the soaps they were looking to cancel, but the ratings were never low enough. As long as their ratings continue to make them the number one watched soap The Young and the Restless will be around in the next ten years.

Many of them include a mother sleeping with her daughter’s husband and a son almost marrying his mother. It is also broadcasted all around the world in numerous countries and has won 31 Daytime Emmy Awards.Even though this soap is the most-watched soap in the world with its soap and ridiculously bold storylines it could be susceptible to ending within the next ten years.
