The Obesity Epidemic in Children

The numbers of children affected by obesity are in the thousands. Many vastly patient parents and teachers have divided their times to help their children. They want the children to overcome the weight issue. There is a lot to do still to empower children. Especially when it comes to staying healthy. Though fast foods are three times as fast to making children increase in weight. The children see this in commercials or their favorite TV show. Fast food is enticing and makes others look at it with temptation. In fact, unwanted foods like burgers and fries are all wrong. Many fast food restaurants are competing. Each year there is an increase in the numbers of new menu items. With the perception that obesity will hit the Z generation hard is a sad fact. The US is  now facing the issues concerning weight and bullying, The following are facts about obesity and children according to the CDC.gov:

  1. Children with obesity are at higher risk for having other chronic health conditions and diseases that impact physical health, such as asthma, sleep apnea, bone and joint problems, type 2 diabetes, and risk factors for heart disease.4, 5, 15-17

  2. Children with obesity are bullied and teased more than their normal weight peers,18 and are more likely to suffer from social isolation, depression, and lower self-esteem.19

  3. In the long term, childhood obesity also is associated with having obesity as an adult, 23 which is linked to serious conditions and diseases such as heart disease, type 2 diabetes, metabolic syndrome, and several types of cancer.24–25

To think that many obese children sometimes drop out of school or end up staying home most of the time is sad since many children need to figure out where they belong. Many obese children see themselves as abnormal. Factoring the discrimination and the lack of support, many decide to end their lives. Many families are facing the loss. Obese children cannot approach the bullying with ease because their confidence level is being shattered. Adding to this they feel that they suffer through body morph-ism. They cannot feel satisfied with their bodies after seeing their classmates or reading fashion magazines. It may be too overwhelming.Everyone wants them to lose the weight but it seems hopeless when the obese child has lost all hopes and lacks confidence. So many can sense the fact that it is not okay for children to bully each other because of obesity. However, no one cannot stop this completely.What could we do for our children who are facing weight problems? There needs to be more encouragement. There also needs to be more love and support. The obese children are hurting because of this epidemic. The obesity epidemic is bad enough in adults but in children is like forcing them to lose their youth or emotional strength altogether. The outlook may seem bleak but thanks for celebrities and politicians such as former first lady Michelle Obama, health and children will always come first.
