Moving Forward from Low Self Esteem
Do you hold people's opinion of you in high regard? Are you carrying the cruel or hurtful statements made in your childhood? I want to let you know it’s possible to start moving forward from low self-esteem.
Get Rid of It
Growing up I had such a hard time looking at myself in the mirror. One of my nicknames was a supposed term of endearment in Spanish which translated to fat. I was always too tall for a Latina and too big. I mean how do you function with your family stereotyping you that way? It was not easy, but I worked on my low self-esteem and realized that it was not impossible. I decided to understand who I was and be comfortable in my own skin. I had to realize that I was never going to be able to wear a size 0. That was okay. The best thing I could do was to get rid of all the junk. To understand that people wanted me to be something I wasn’t. I could never be 5’2 like my mom was. I was different, and that is not bad at all. My first advice is to get rid of all the words and the image you have in your mind about yourself that was created by others. Learn who you are. You won’t be able to see yourself differently if your self-esteem is linked to words from others. You need to let it go and give space to the new you.
Who Am I?
The first step in making space for the new me was to understand who I was. See as a Christian I missed the most important part. What does God say about me? There are so many verses in the Bible that helped me to understand how beautiful I was, but my favorite is this one.
For you created my inmost being;you knit me together in my mother’s womb.I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made;your works are wonderful,I know that full well.My frame was not hidden from youwhen I was made in the secret placewhen I was woven together in the depths of the earth.Your eyes saw my unformed body;all the days ordained for me were written in your bookbefore one of them came to be.Psalm 139:13-16 NIV
God created us, and we are fearfully and wonderfully made! We can even go back to the beginning.
So God created mankind in his own image,in the image of God he created them;male and female he created them.Genesis 1:27NIV
God created us in His image. When I read this scripture, an understanding came to me letting me know that God did not make a mistake. That I was created with purpose and I am made in His image. I don’t need to think lowly of myself because it's like saying “God you did not do a good job” Each of us is different. Embrace who you are. Let God love you and accept His love. Loving ourselves is hard because we are ourselves own worst critics. The only reason for that is because we are never thankful but always wanting what we don’t have. You have qualities in you that are far more important than just your physical appearance. As I started to accept myself and understand God created me and that I was beautiful there was no holding me back from enjoying who I was. My weirdness became cute to me. I started to understand that I was just perfect as I was. Losing weight became more a desire to be healthy than torturing me with dieting. I only changed my perspective on things.
Yes, you read that right! One thing that helped me to move forward from low self-esteem was to talk to myself. I still declare over my life and assure myself. I have even written in my fridge the words I am beautiful. The more you say it, the more you believe it. Then after you believe it, you start walking like it. Speak life into yourself. We allow so many people to talk to us in negative terms and we need to stop that. It's not crazy to talk to yourself and say that you are enough because God lives inside of you.Take some time and write some affirmations for yourself. I will also recommend writing some Bible verses and repeat them every morning. If you can repeat them as many times as you want.
Death and life are in the power of the tongue, and those who love it will eat its fruits. Proverbs 18:22 ESV
You have the power in your mouth to either declare death or life in your situation. Choose life and speak the Word of God. Our Bible is a powerful weapon. It's not only words. That word is alive and active waiting for you to use it.
