Kingdom Corner: The Beauty of Abstinence

This week we’re going to take a look at the beauty of abstinence. Now, don’t run off. There’s a lot to this subject, so we will touch on all of them. Let’s get started and find out about the different ways of being abstinent.

The Obvious

As women and men of God, we are called on to keep ourselves pure before the Lord. There is no better way to uphold this than to stay sexually pure. Women and men can decide to withhold sharing their bodies before becoming married. In today’s society, this is often extremely rare and difficult to maintain. Face it; we’re all a little guilty of something. This might surprise you, but since the Lord forgives in such a special way, this is available to everyone of any age. Remember, God never changes; thus neither does what His Word says. There is no difference between the Word and the Lord. They are one and the same. It’s like meeting someone and making a verbal contract that you both agree to. The contract is your word, and it is what you stand on as a virtue. Therefore, you are “as good as your word,” and you are your word. So, as the Lord is Justice Supreme, He cannot break His Word to you. Why have I said all of this? To prepare your mindset for the bomb, I’m about to drop:

He has removed our sins as far from us as the east is from the west. Psalm 103:12 NLT

And again:

Though your sins are like scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they are red as crimson, they shall be like wool. Isaiah 1:18 NIV

Now for the New Testament

If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness. 1 John 1:9 NIV

In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, in accordance with the riches of God’s grace. Ephesians 1:7 NIV

Even if you are no longer sexually pure, you can start over right now and make a new Covenant with God to remain pure until you get married. Yes, God will renew this Covenant of Purity with you. No matter your age, gender whatever. You can surrender your sexual sins to God, and He will gladly forgive you and make a new Covenant. Isn’t that amazing?! God is so good that He will treat you as His beloved Israel and strike a new Covenant with you because His Son gave His life for this very reason: forgiveness. Don’t let regret and shame hold you back. God loves you and desires the best for you.

The Not So Obvious

Did you know you can be abstinent from other things that will increase your faith and God’s grace upon your life? Let’s talk about your diet. Now, giving up certain foods is not only for Catholics. There are other Biblical reasons to cut something out of your diet, at least for a couple of weeks as you focus more on prayer. Skip one meal a day, and don’t make it breakfast. We all skip breakfast easier than the other meals. Make it a challenge. Don’t give the Lord a minimalist attitude and take an easy road. While you would be eating go into prayer. Make it your “closet time” with God and commune with Him deeply. You will be blessed for every fast and every prayer. Test it and see!Another way to practice abstinence is to rid yourself of worldly pursuits that might not line up with the ways of the Lord. Gambling, excess drinking, or a materially oriented mindset are not conducive to assisting a Christian to be a better disciple of God. Everything in balance. Don’t lean one side or to the other; take the middle. Trust me; it’s healthier for you. You can easily opt out of watching television for a week and devote that time to prayer. You can stop spending your extra money on lottery tickets and give that instead to the offerings for your church’s outreach. God helps those who help themselves. This way of practicing will also bless you.

The Beauty

Every little (or big) thing you sacrifice shows how much you love God. You will have the peace that surpasses all understanding. So, remember the beauty of abstinence; remember what God says about forgiveness. Then, make wise decisions to increase your faith, and God’s saving Grace. The beauty of abstinence is found in the limitless mercy of our Lord and Savior. You can find it right now.
