Do You (and Your Kids) Need to be on Social Media?

Do You (and Your Kids) Need to be on Social Media?

There are certain things that humans require to stay alive. Food, water, shelter, fire, depending on the weather, clothes. Those things are also needed when humans get sick and injured, or medicine and healthcare are required. Notice, a Twitter account was not mentioned. Neither is Facebook, Snapchat, or having a blog. Humans are social creatures that need interaction, but social media is crazier than the Joker.

Pros

Social media isn’t all bad though, and it's a useful tool to promote a business or organization. You can sell yourself to a company or organization that might hire you! People can also stay in touch with each other.Humans who don’t know each other meet, make new friends, share news and events. Social media brings people together. It serves a human’s need to socialize and be part of something.

Super Pros

It keeps people and societies from becoming a country similar to North Korea. You and your kids need to stay informed and in touch with the world, connect with others, and form relationships. It’s in your nature and your best interest.

Cons

It's a useful tool to promote a business or organization. However,  businesses and agencies will subtly take your information to suit their needs. It’s the cost of free internet. They are also very interested in your pictures and what you share. Not just reputable businesses and organizations. In Australia, 60% of children’s pictures on Facebook end up on kiddie porn websites. The remaining ones are easily taken and used by others illicitly. If it’s on Facebook or any platform, it’s not all yours anymore. This is why photographers don't use Pinterest.

Super-Cons

It’s also how people who don’t get along, and strangers who think they’re anonymous stay in touch. There is never a smart or socially acceptable, civil social media feud. There are also those "anonymous" strangers who think they are right. Screaming and championing their cause, being heroes! They’re not, but everyone has fantasies. Fantasies are very destructive and dangerous if taken too far. There is also such a thing as too much connection. Some people need to be apart or stay away from people. Reasons will vary. But individuals who are unapologetic liars and manipulators are at the top of the "Stay Away" list. Especially for your kids. It's quite easy to do using the internet and social media. It’s not hard to “acquire” someone else’s picture. It is the Wild West out there.

Fake News & Manufactured Controversy

Slightly below them on that list, is people who spread lies and start controversy. They are equally toxic, especially if they have an agenda. The people who run “Racists Getting Fired,” an actual Tumblr blog, are great at not being racist. Even greater at demonizing people who were set up, framed. They ended up not being racist.

Yay or Nay?

You and your kids need to stay informed and in touch with others. But social media isn’t always the best, or safest way. It’s not inherently evil, but humans can sometimes be. Hopefully, your children will grow up to be the best humans in the world. So please disconnect and put down your phone for a while. There are crazy things on the internet not meant for anyone's eyes. These things also exist in the real world. But luckily there are much less. Also, people end up being accountable for them.Despite these perils, there’s so much life out there. Go out there and enjoy it, with your kids, safely!
