The History of Victoria's Secret

The lingerie industry is fierce and unlike other clothing lines, it caters to a more specific customer. Most people buying lingerie and sleepwear have very specific taste and only shop at certain stores. They are comfortable buying sexy clothing and that it's worth the price. If you’re a designer of lingerie they have to be very unique in order to sale. Unlike other clothing they're not publicly displayed, they are for private activity. There is only one store that comes to mind when people think about lingerie and that’s Victoria’s Secret.

History of Victoria's Secret 

One day businessman Roy Raymond was out at a department store buying lingerie for his wife. He instantly grew very uncomfortable going through racks of the sexy, floral garments, and robes. He said in an interview that “I always had the feeling the department store saleswomen thought I was an unwelcome intruder.” Roy Raymond was a Stanford graduate with a MBA. He saw his discomfort in the department store as a business opportunity. In 1977 he borrowed $80,000 to open the first Victoria’s Secret. His reasoning for opening the store was mainly to make men comfortable buying lingerie for the women in their lives.

The Story Behind the Name: Who’s Victoria?

Many people might think Roy Raymond named this line after his wife. However that’s not true. Instead of being named after a specific woman, the name was inspired by the store’s décor. His wife designed the store with a Victoria inspired style. The design was to evoke the class and dignity associated with the Victorian era. Victoria was chosen to reiterate the Victorian influence, and secret to create a level of intimacy for shoppers. In 1982 Raymond sold his business to Leslie Wexner for $1 million dollars.He realized that there was a huge amount of women buying lingerie for themselves. Victoria’s Secret earned about $500,000 in its first year sales. After Raymond sold the company to Leslie Wexner it expanded to five stores, a catalogue, and made $6 million a year. More women were shopping at Victoria’s Secret, making it the business the success it is today.

Victoria’s Secret Today

Today it’s a billion dollar company with lingerie’s and diamond studded bras that are worth millions. It has expanded its brand by selling t-shirts, leggings, dresses, shoes, cosmetics, handbags, and perfume. Victoria’s Secret’s fashion models such as Adriana Lima, Alessandra Ambrosio, and Candice have salary’s well over a million dollars. It's most desired lingerie fashion shows to be featured in.

As A Customer of Victoria’s Secret

I began being a frequent shopper of Victoria’s Secret in 2013. Initially I would only shop there for perfume and body lotions. However after ordering a sleep shirt and a pair of leggings I became a fan of their apparel. I continued ordering pajamas and clothing so much that I would get a new catalogue in the mail every day. What I enjoyed about the pajamas and apparel are the styles of them and how comfortable they are. It's definitely one of my favorite places to shop especially when it comes to sleepwear.
