Have You Done These Things Before Your Abroad Vacation?

You are excited, you have looked forward to this vacation and can’t wait any longer! Before you go on that amazing vacation, I want to make you sure that you get some things in order so that you won’t have any mishaps on this trip. Have you done these things before your abroad vacation?

Passport Ready

For some, this should already be done if you are leaving in a month. This takes time, and while you are at it, I will also recommend getting a Passport card. While you are traveling abroad, this will be your only valid form of identification. You must carry it with you always. Is safer to leave your passport in your hotel safe and use your Passport card when you are out and about. The reason is that a million things can happen! You could lose your bag and find yourself with no means of identification. If you do not have a Passport card, I will recommend making a copy of your passport and carry it with you. If you have any problems or situations, you can always let them know that your original is back at your hotel and you just need to go get it.  A lot of people do not think about this and is very important to have a backup when it comes to your only form of identification. Your license won’t tell them anything, for all they know it could be fake.  Take precautions, as they say, is better to be safe than sorry. Remember you’re not in the USA anymore, and things work differently.

Locate Your Embassy

This is also critical information to know. Know how far you are from the US Embassy and how to get there if it comes down to it. I know you’re ready just to have fun, but if you have never traveled abroad and you end up having any situation, this is where you call to get help. They can provide translators if needed and they have professionals that they usually work with for any legal situations as well. If you end up losing your passport this where you need to go.

Research

I can’t emphasize this enough. Learn a little of the place you decided to vacation in. It is important to not err on the side of ignorance because of it being a tourist destination. Sometimes it pays to do research; their places that are amazing and visited by locals that you could find because of research. Make sure that you verify what languages are spoken. Don’t assume that they will know English. Log into the Department of State to verify if any travel advisories are currently active and for what reason. In Europe, the Middle East and Asia the power connections and receptors are different. Verify with your hotel that they have American outlets or adapters if not you can find or buy one online or at Best Buy before you leave.  Write down emergency numbers or locate them at your hotel in case of emergency.

Be Bold

You planned this trip and invested time and money to experience something different. Do exactly that! Be bold and do things you never did before. Go snorkeling, go skydiving, go to a museum, go swimming, and enjoy sightseeing!  Don’t limit yourself! Be ready to enjoy different types of food, leave the burgers for home. Leave your work and worries back at home. Take time for you and your family. Enjoy and invest emotionally in your life by creating new relationships and experiences. There are things we can’t enjoy if we don’t try them.
