1. Who are you?
A diver was exploring the bottom of the Pacific ocean. As he navigated downward, he saw an oyster stuck in the sandy sea floor. Carefully, he swam back to the surface and climbed into his boat. He gently placed it on a small table in the back of the boat to examine this curiosity. The oyster was smooth and white with coffee swirls. The diver carefully pried open the oyster and discovered a beautiful sparkling pearl resting inside. Like this oyster resting at the bottom of the ocean, you are the priceless treasure within.
The Pearl: A Priceless Treasure
Let's start on the outside and work our way inward. Find a mirror or look at the camera on your phone. What do you see? Two eyes, two ears, a mouth, and a nose? Well, I see more. Don't believe me? Look at your eyes again. Eyes are the windows to the soul. Your eyes show expression and are the connection between people. Look at your ears. They are the gift you can give to others through the act of listening. Wait! How can a nose be helpful? Do you have a friend who makes those amazing pies or that child who likes to pick you flowers? Use your nose and mouth to show your admiration for these people. Now, let us look within. Every person on this earth is unique. Each person has gifts only they can offer. What skills do you have that define you? Is it a good singing voice, people skills, or being able to juggle? Whatever your gifts may be, use them. Life is meaningless without purpose. Give purpose to who you are.
2. Who do you want to be?
Let's take a closer look at those skills you have. Are you fun-loving and energetic? Do you love working with people or do you prefer to work behind the scenes? Reach out to people and make friends. If you love working with people, find opportunities to volunteer your time to serve others. You could plant a garden, help clean, or help out with yard work. Do what makes you happy.A spunky thirteen-year-old girl had a dream to travel the world and write all about her adventures. She would day-dream at school and write stories in her arithmetic book. In high school, she made some friends who were not the best sort. Her mother warned her to not let them be a bad influence on her. She promised they wouldn't. College years start, and the friends she promised wouldn't influence her did. She began failing her classes, missing curfew, and getting into trouble. Her mother found her daughter one night sitting on her bed crying. The daughter didn't know who she was anymore.Ever feel like this young woman? Have you fallen into the trap of pretending to be someone else to make others happy? You are not alone. This lady left her friends, straightened out her grades, and found who she was on the inside. Her true self never disappeared; it was in her the whole time. She just needed to remember. Be the person you want to be, and not what others want you to be.
3. A Priceless Treasure.
Like the pearl inside the oyster, you are a priceless treasure. Never forget that. We all make mistakes and mess up. Learn from them. If life knocks you down, pick yourself back up. Take those mad skills you have and use them. Be who you are and don't allow others to make you into something that you are not. You will never be happy living a lie. Look inside yourself and decide who you are and who you want to be. Only you can make that choice.A master potter pushes, pulls, bakes, and paints a piece of clay. The finished product is a beautiful masterpiece. The world pressures you to fit in. I have news for you. If the world doesn't accept you, it's their loss. Who you are is beautiful. Be the force that changes this world for the better. You are a priceless treasure inside and out.
