Sugar, despite what some say, is not an inherently awful nutrient. But, depending on the source, it can be extremely detrimental to your health. Here are some of the dangers of eating too many sugary sweets:
Consuming too much sugar makes cavities more likely to develop. Sugar is one of the primary nutrients consumed by one of the hundreds of harmful bacteria that may settle in your mouth. Consuming sugar excessively provides this bacteria with a constant supply of food, allowing it to grow and multiply. Before you know it, a cavity develops as a result.
Waste of Calories
Sweets and similar sugary foods are often full of empty calories. Empty calories are part of foods that may provide temporary energy but lack important nutrients such as vitamins, minerals, or fiber. High-sugar foods fail to satisfy your hunger, and they deny vital nutritional content that you need for a healthy diet. Your digestive system actually expends more energy than you gain from such substances in the process of digestion as well.
