Cooking with the Non-Cook: Steak and Potatoes

Mother's Day is Sunday, and most of us can't do enough for the one who got us through everything. A lovely home cooked meal is a great start for mom's special day. Think about all of the meals you have had the courtesy of mom, and then, try not to apologize too much. Instead, whip up a nice steak dinner to go with her card and gift. If the Non-Cook can do it for Mom, then so can you. I promise it's five star quality with two-star difficulty.


  1. 1-inch thick Steak (Porterhouse, T-Bone, Strip or Sirloin)

  2. Meat Tenderizer Seasoning

  3. Worcestershire Sauce

  4. Soy Sauce

  5. Steak Seasoning Blend

    1. 2 tsp. Onion Powder

    2. 2 tsp. Garlic Powder

    3. 1 tsp. Pepper

  6. Potatoes

  7. Ice Cubes

  8. Foil

  9. Salt and Pepper

  10. Butter


  1. First, you will need to marinate your steak. Some people like to let their steaks marinate for a couple of days to achieve maximum flavor. At a minimum, you will want to marinate them for 30 minutes before grilling. Dust your steaks with the meat tenderizer seasoning. Then, sprinkle your steak seasoning blend to your desired level. This seasoning blend is a baseline, but some include more or less of certain ingredients.

  2. While your steak is marinating, light your grill so it can start warming up.

  3. While your grill is warming up, you will start prepping the potatoes. Begin by tearing foil into at least 8 to 12-inch squares to hold your potatoes on the grill. Cut your potatoes into wedges, and season them with salt and pepper. Then place the potatoes on the foil with a tablespoon of butter and one ice cube. Fully wrap your potatoes before putting them on the top rack of your grill. If you don't have an upper rack, place the potatoes on a lower-heat area of the grill. The potatoes alone will take 30-40 minutes to grill. Check them by poking them with a fork.

  4. Depending on your desired steak temp, you will want to time exactly when to put your steaks on the grill. Here is the link we use to determine cook time and internal temp for each type of steak from rare to well done. Following these guidelines almost always gets the steak the way you desire them. However, always keep an eye on them and use your judgment.

  5. Take the steak and potatoes off the grill, and enjoy your Mother's day holiday with an excellent dinner. It will go a long way, trust me.
