How to Balance Work & Play in Your Life
Life is filled with endless tasks that we need to accomplish throughout our day. In fact, if we aren’t careful, we can end up feeling as though our entire lives are spent crossing off a checklist. However, for life to be more balanced, we must learn to incorporate both work and play.
Having Purpose in Our Work
When it comes to working, first and foremost we must have a purpose in it. As often as possible, we need to ensure we are engaged in tasks and work that we enjoy. This applies to our career as well as tasks within our daily life. Therefore, if we hate doing math, it would not be realistic to seek a career in accounting. If we are not detail oriented, then careers such as editing or project management may not be the right path for us. Additionally, when we are accomplishing our tasks throughout our day, we must be realistic about how much we can do. If we need to do laundry, take the kids to school, buy groceries, finish a project for work, help a sick friend in need, and get our car repaired, we should not try to do all of this in one day. It can lead to one becoming stressed, which is unnecessary.
Making Time for Play
Of course, as we become older and take on more roles such as being a spouse, parent, and employee as well as a son or daughter, sibling, friend, and family member, our obligations to others leave less time for ourselves to do activities that we love. However, we must learn not to make excuses and to do today what we might put off for tomorrow. For example, if there is a movie you want to see, you should see it if time permits. Make time for your workouts and your drawings. Do activities in life that move you and get you excited each day. A life filled with work and tasks can begin to feel meaningless.
Positive Experiences Breed a Balanced Life
Surround yourself with positive people that bring out the best in you. It is crucial to do so in both work and play. Although we realistically cannot choose our bosses or colleagues, as often as possible, try to surround yourself with positive influences. Life should be filled with happiness, joy, love, and laughter. No matter how serious you are, it is important to be able to laugh and see the humor in life. The people you spend time with should be loving, encouraging, kind, authentic individuals. If you have a spouse, he or she should help to bring you up to a higher level, not reduce you to a lower place. When your life is more in balance and is authentic to you, it will be easier to maintain balance in regards to both work and play.
