Album Review: Kendrick Lamar

Kendrick Lamar's latest album has been one that has changed the modern rap and hip hop world. To understand why this album has been so successful, we need to look at the themes of the album.Lately, rap and hip hop have been about things most people cannot relate. "25 sitting on 25 mil" is a lyric well known to Drake fans, but how many of hit fans does that apply to? On Lamar's second song "DNA." he says "I got hustle though, ambition, flow inside my DNA." Lamar is essentially saying that he is where he's at because of these attributes.

It Focuses On the Reality

What makes this album and similar albums (J. Coles 4 Your Eyes Only.) so relatable is the songs focus on the reality of things. The struggle of having to deal with a society that on the surface acclaims equality and justice for all, yet systematic racism and stigmas dominate people's opinion. In the third song, Lamar says "Fox News wants to use my name for percentage. My latest muse is my niece. She's worth living."

It's Not About Glamour

Lamar brings all these issues to the forefront of the rap world. No longer is rap about the glamour of partying. Instead, it's about the hustle and grind of day to day tasks trying to do things the right way and stay out trouble while doing so.The album is very powerful for this that are well aware of the inner struggles of the black community. Mental health, racism, crime, the justice system, etc. Lamar is able to shed light on these situations because he came from this background. His album is definitely an album worth listening to.Let us know what your thoughts are on the Kendrick Lamar album below!
