2016 was a solid year for movies. Superhero blockbusters and the continuation of sci-fi classics punctuated box office sales. With the new year right around the corner, let’s take a look at what’s on the horizon for the silver screen in 2017.
Guardians of the Galaxy 2 is the sequel of the surprise box office success in 2014. Major stars such as Chris Pratt, Bradley Cooper, and Zoe Saldana reprise their roles from the original movie. New additions including Kurt Russell, Karen Gillian, and Sylvester Stallone round out the cast with exceptional star power. Plot details are in short supply, but trailers suggest an end of the universe scenario. Casting hints suggest that Star Lord’s father Ego, and Thanos’ daughter, Nebula, are involved. Expect an emotional roller coaster of laughs, tears, and cheers when Guardians of the Galaxy 2 comes to theaters on May 5th.
The Dark Tower is an upcoming film adaptation of a fiction series by Stephen King. Many consider the story of The Gunslinger to be his greatest work, and King himself calls the series his “magnum opus”. The film will act as a sequel to the last book with Idris Elba, Tom Taylor, and Matthew McConaughey in leading roles. Director Nikolaj Arcel could find it challenging to capture King’s signature mix of horror, wonder, and shocks. If he succeeds along with cast and crew, then the film has everything it needs to be an incredible hit at the theater on July 28th.
Although polarizing at the time, many consider Blade Runner to be one of the greatest sci-fi movies of all time. Despite a cult following and ever-rising popularity, many sequels were planned and scrapped until Blade Runner 2049.
Blade Runner 2049 promises the return of Harrison Ford as Rick Deckard and features Ryan Gosling in a leading role. It will be a challenge to balance the action, the noir atmosphere and complex themes of the first film. Still, fans of the original Blade Runner should have something amazing to look forward to on October 6th.
