Forgiveness is a powerful thing. It is almost like releasing those who have hurt us from the responsibility of the actions or words they have taken against us. But why is forgiveness so important? Can’t we never talk to the person again and completely forget things ever happen? Unfortunately not. Forgiveness not only allows for healing on the wrong doer’s part, but also for yourself.
Get rid of all bitterness, rage, anger, harsh words, and slander, as well as all types of evil behavior. Instead, be kind to each other, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, just as God through Christ as forgiven you Ephesians 4:31-32 NLT
If we don’t forgive each other, bitterness will begin to seep into our lives causing even more pain. God tells us to get rid of all types of evil. I know it is easier said than done in some cases. Maybe someone has physically hurt you or emotionally hurt you so bad, your heart is broken. But living your life in bitterness and anger won’t heal your heart. It will only harden it so much that it takes even more work and time to fix it.
You must keep in mind that the person whom has hurt you is probably also hurting.
I am not overstating it when I say that the man who caused all the trouble hurt all of you more than he hurt me. Most of you opposed him, and that was punishment enough. Now, however, it is time to forgive and comfort him. Otherwise he may be overcome by discouragement 2 Corinthians 2:5-8 NLT
God tells us to forgive one another not only because it will heal our hearts, but also because the person who has wronged us is hurting too. To be overcome with discouragement is a huge burden to carry. There is nothing worse than knowing that you have screwed up and knowing you cannot fix it. Think about a time, great or small, that you have hurt someone. We all have done it; we aren’t perfect. Now think about not being able to fix the issue. That hurts just knowing that but it also does not give you the chance to heal for yourself.
Not only is it good for us to forgive because it heals, but God commands us to forgive. God tells us:
If you forgive those who sin against you, your Heavenly Father will forgive you. But if you refuse to forgive others, your Father will not forgive your sins Matthew 6:14 NLT.
You know that when God tells you something like that, it must be important.
I don’t want to scare anyone into forgiveness, because I think our hearts have to be in the right place for forgiveness to even take place, but I wanted to show how important forgiveness is to both people. No one ever said it would be easy to forgive, but in order to heal, forgiveness must be there. Just remember to pray. It is okay to ask God for the strength to forgive someone. He will help you if you ask. You could even pray with those who have hurt you if you feel up to it. Just remember to forgive.
