Sometimes when we work too much we come to a point where sleep becomes one of our last priorities. Without 6-8 hours of sleep daily you can become exhausted, resulting in your inability to fall asleep. Lack of sleep can also affect how we function in our day to day lives, and not in a good way. Here are some ways to help you get the rest that your body so desperately needs.
First things first, you need to relax yourself before getting in bed and going to sleep. I would start off by taking a nice hot shower or run yourself a bath. Taking the time to cleanse your body will help you feel more relaxed. After taking a shower, take some time to pay attention to your skin. Create a simple skincare routine or simply put on a face mask to rejuvenate your skin after a long day. Now it’s time to go to sleep, so turn the lights off and hop into bed. Try listening to some calming music to clear your mind.
Turn Off All Electronics
When we come home from a long day at work, all we want to do is turn on our computers and watch something entertaining. This can turn 1 hour of watching shows into 3-4 hours. By the time you’re done, you’re not tired enough to fall asleep. The same thing happens with your phone. You’re on your way to bed and then you end up scrolling on all social media platforms for hours on end. To get away from this terrible habit, simply turn off all your electronic devices and put them away so you can’t get to them. If you really want to entertain yourself before bed, another alternative is to turn on “Night Mode”. This way you won’t keep yourself awake with the bright light from your electronic device.
Still can’t fall asleep? Try drinking a hot cup of tea. It’s good way for your body to wind down, especially if you have the infamous tired eyes. I recommend chamomile tea or Sleepy Time Tea as they are known to calm the body and slow down the mind. Make sure to steep it well so that it will have strong effect on you and make you sleepy within minutes. While drinking your tea, set the mood by lighting a few candles and enjoying every sip of your tea.
Focus On Breathing
We all know what it’s like to be in bed with our eyes closed and feel like it’s taking forever to fall asleep. After an extended period of time, this can become frustrating. In result, we turn on the lights to then unnecessarily stay up for another couple of hours. If you have this problem, then use a different approach when trying to fall asleep. Try breathing deeply and slowly, focusing on nothing but relaxing the mind. If you can’t do this on your own, there are podcasts you can listen to that can help you out. I recommend the app Headspace. The program really takes you through the motions of getting to a state of calm enough to fall asleep quickly and easily.
After following a couple of these steps, you’ll be on your way to a night full of deep sleep.
