Being a Proverbs 31 Woman

The Bible has many lessons to be learned, but what about what a true woman of God looks like. There are commonly used verses about what the woman should be to her husband and to her children but there is one chapter that tells us what kind of a woman we should strive to be. Proverbs 31:10-31 describes a wife of noble character. Within these verses, there are ten lessons to learn.

  1. Faith and wisdom come from our mouths. When things go sour, we answer the trials with faith on our lips. (Proverbs 31:26)
  2. Marriage is brought up in verses 11-12, showing that a husband has full confidence in his wife. As wives, we should be bringing our husbands good in their lives and not harm.
  3. A woman of noble character have children who respect her and “call her blessed”. She seeks out the best for her family as well (Proverbs 31:28)
  4. Service should be one of our strong suits. We should serve no matter what the case. This means in the home and outside of the home. (Proverbs 31:12)
  5. Finances are not just for one person. As wives, we should be including our husbands in our finances but in the same sense, our husband s should be able to trust us with the finances if something goes wrong. Along with this idea of making financial decisions, our husband s should be able to trust us with other decisions regarding our family. (Proverbs 31:14)
  6. Working hard doesn’t just mean in our homes; it also means within our work places. We should work hard and not be lazy. In verse 13 and 15, the bible talks about how we should have success in both our homes and in our work places. We should be profitable in everything we do.
  7. Our homes should be kept clean to the best of our ability. No, this doesn’t mean that the women are the only ones who clean and cook. However, when we serve our husbands, one thing we can do is try to make sure that our homes are tidy when they come home from work. That way, both of you can spend time with each other or with your family. You can even spend more time with God. (Proverbs 31:27)
  8. As a Proverbs 31 Woman, we should also strive to not fear tomorrow or what it has to bring. We already know that God will take care of us, so why fear what we do not know. (Proverbs 31:21)
  9. Proverbs 31 may talk a lot about what a woman of noble character should do but it also talks about what a woman looks like. In verse 22, the bible tells us that a woman of noble character is “clothed in fine linen and purple”; a sign of royalty. So as a woman of noble character, our appearance should be important to us. We should dress in a way that not only respects God and our husbands but also respects ourselves.
  10. Lastly, we should not be lazy in anything we do. This applies to everything in our lives. With our homes, our families, our marriages, our appearance, everything should be held at a high standard to show respect to God, our spouses, and ourselves. (Proverbs 31:15)
Don’t think there is any trick to master these all at once. I am still striving to be a Proverbs 31 Woman every day of my life. Just remember that with practice, we can learn what it truly means to be a Proverbs 31 Woman.
