Moving Forward: Recovering from 2016

2016 is officially over and 2017 is well underway. Moving into the new year, people usually have one of three perspectives. First, there are the people who are excited for all the year has in store for them. Another would be those who are unenthused and feel 2016 painted a dim view of what’s to come. Lastly, there’s the people who feel that no big shift has happened and that it’s simply another day, good or bad. Regardless of your current perspective, 2017 can be the best year of your life so far.

Letting Go

One of the major difficulties in experiencing the new year to its fullest potential is holding on to the past. Some of us are stuck on the upsets and disappointments of 2016. Maybe you didn’t reach the goals you set at the beginning of the year. Maybe the candidate you voted for didn’t win and maybe you lost some loved ones. While these are all legitimate concerns and disappointments, it’s important to reflect on these things; letting go doesn’t devalue your losses. Letting go allows you to move into the new year without the ball and chain of disappointment and hopelessness. It’s simply accepting that what happened in 2016 happened and you’re still standing. You survived 2016 and now it’s over and a new year with new possibilities has begun.

Moving Forward

The key to moving forward is refusing to view 2017 through the lens of 2016. Therefore, you cannot allow the past to dictate your view of the future. Look at 2017 as a fresh start and a new beginning. You can live this year anyway you choose. So, if you have a choice, why choose hopelessness? Why choose fear? Why choose shame? Instead, make the conscious decision to live a hopeful and joyful life. Each morning remind yourself that the past is over and newness has begun. The old you is gone and the new you chooses to live in hope and freedom.
