Are You Making These Packing Mistakes?

Traveling is a part of life whether it’s for vacation or business. Some of us travel more often than others, but each of us have probably been overnight somewhere and needed to pack at least one suitcase. As simple as it seems to simply throw some of your belongings into a suitcase there are actually quite a few common packing mistakes. Take a look and see if you have committed any of these recently!

Common Mistakes When Packing For A Trip

TSA Prohibited Items

The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) has a list of certain items that are not permitted in your luggage. Check their website to see if what you want to pack is allowed. TSA’s website includes information about what is permitted in carry-ons, checked luggage, and/or both.

Regular-Sized Toiletries

Packing full-sized shampoo, lotion, etc. are heavy and take up valuable space! Go to the store and purchase travel-sized toiletries that will fit more comfortably in your suitcase. Packing smaller portions saves space. Plus, the TSA does not allow full-sized products in carry-ons.

Nonessential Clothing

Be sure to be intentional about which clothes you pack for your trip. Every article should serve a dual purpose, able to be worn multiple times. You can pack accessories like scarves, shawls, ties, and belts to add color. Additionally, these accessories can also turn a daytime outfit into an evening outfit! Pack quick-drying, wrinkle-resistant fabrics over clothes that require dry-cleaning or ironing. Additionally, chose light fabrics when you can.

Too Many Shoes

Try your best to pack only two pairs of shoes. If you are traveling by plane, wear the bulkier pair of shoes, but be sure they are easy to slip off through security. Pack a pair of dressy shoes as your second pair, but high-heels and heavy soles should be avoided to save on space.

Extraneous Gear

These days hotels provide a lot of the essentials such as bathrobes, towels, and hair dryers. With this in mind, there is no need to pack these items. If possible, do some research about what your hotel provides in order to cut down on packing unnecessary items.

Bulky Reading Material

Avoid packing huge books while going on vacation. Instead, take along magazines, newspapers, journals, and cheap paperback books. If you tend to read a lot on vacation and one book just won’t do, you might want to consider purchasing a Kindle or some other e-reader device.

Valuables

Because we don’t live in a perfect world, when we travel there are sometimes mishaps. While traveling, your luggage could get lost or items could get stolen. To avoid losing something valuable don’t pack them in the first place. If you need a lot of cash or a certain expensive item then be sure to pack them in your carry-on instead of a checked bag. Also, carry money in multiple forms: cash, debit cards, and credit cards.
