We all get overwhelmed from time to time. Often we pack our schedules to the brim, and it makes it difficult for us to stay present. We’re at work thinking about the casserole we have to make for the potluck that night. Then we find ourselves at the potluck thinking of the project that’s due tomorrow at work. Staying present can seem like another task on the to-do list that we just won’t get around to, but here are some tips to make it easier.
Set It & Forget It
Add important events, deadlines, and tasks to a calendar. Then set alerts to remind you to stay on schedule. If making to-do lists works best for you, set the alarm on your phone to remind yourself to check it or to start on the first item on your list. If you do this, you won’t have to worry about forgetting things and can live in the moment.
Prioritizing allows you to stay present because you place value on the task at hand. Sometimes you won’t have time to do everything you wanted to accomplish that day; that’s completely okay. As long as you prioritize what’s important, you can accept putting off the less important task to another day. Being able to see the value in what you’re doing allows you to enjoy it more and give it your undivided attention.
Write Things Down
Even when we make our calendars and prioritize, we can still find our minds drifting elsewhere. Maybe you remember something you forgot to schedule. It could be that you are simply daydreaming about something you want in life; perhaps the company gala you have been excited about is coming up, and you can’t stop thinking about it. Keep a journal with you to write down these things. Writing them down allows you to feel that you have successfully given the topic enough thought and now you can move on.
