Losing weight can sometimes be an overwhelming task: where in the world do you start? Do you quit drinking all soda cold turkey? Do you run a thousand miles a day? Thinking of the discipline it requires to shed the pounds can be so crippling that many people never start. What if I told you that there are simple, healthy things that you can start doing right now?
Perhaps your thinking is what needs to change. Consider telling yourself to “achieve a healthier lifestyle” rather than “lose weight”. After all, it should be more about feeling energetic and fitting into those skinny jeans than a number on a scale. Jennifer Bright Reich (a writer for Women’s Health), suggests squeezing into your skinny jeans once a month because it will demonstrate just how your body is changing. She states that this is more accurate to weight gain or lose because there are times that your weigh will increase even when you are burning fat and increasing your muscle mass.
We all should strive to live long enough to see our grandchildren reach adulthood. And there is no better time than the present. Start doing these things daily and they will make a difference in your overall health.
Rather than eating the traditional “three squares a day”, consider switching to five meals. This seems counter-intuitive when you first read it; you might be thinking, “Eat more often? I thought I was trying to be more healthy.” The trick is to eat smaller amounts but more often because it forces your metabolism to be constantly working and doing so at a faster rate. When you eat three bigger meals, your body thinks it needs to store up some food rather than using it all up. This results in fat storage.
Take the stairs rather than taking the elevator, if possible. Walking up flights of stairs can burn far more calories than standing on an elevator for a few minutes. Rather than popping pills, eat foods that provide the proper dosage of vitamins and minerals. The pill forms do not always have the correct amount that your body requires. Change your diet to accommodate for your body’s needs.
