Healthy Junk Food Substitutes

Everyone has a guilty pleasure for junk food. It’s the kind of food that has a great taste, but barely any nutrition. What is good for the taste buds isn’t always the best for our body. We love to reach for potato chips, candy, ice cream, cookies, cake but at times reject healthy foods that are not so full of salt and sugar are foods and vegetables. The truth is there is a way to eat the foods that are tasty as well as nutritious. These healthy junk food substitutes will satisfy your sweet tooth and provide you with the nutrition you need.

Nut Thins

If you’re like most people, then you probably crave potato chips and can’t just eat one. For a healthy substitute try eating Nut Thins. These are nut and cracker snacks that are made from almonds. They are wheat and gluten free and come in different flavors; the pepper jack cheese is the most popular. As a fan of these snacks, I can tell you they are just as tasty as chips, and you can’t just eat one. With only 130 calories per serving it won’t be a guilty pleasure, but instead a healthy snack.

Frozen Fruit

For all the sweet tooth cravings eating frozen fruit will satisfy you. Fruit has sugar, but it’s natural sugar. The next time you’re craving candy, freeze some grapes. It’s a great healthy junk food substitute. You can put a frozen watermelon on a stick for a great alternative for a sugar-filled Popsicle.

Vegan Ice Cream & Other Ice Cream Substitutes

Hundreds of people say ice cream is the one dessert they can never give up. While it’s delicious, it’s also very fattening and has very little nutritional value. Vegan ice cream is a great substitute because it has a mixture of frozen fruit and no added sugar. Other healthy delicious ice cream substitutes are strawberry and banana ice cream sandwiches and almond milk popsicles. If you’re looking for a great protein ice cream that won’t throw your macros off try HaloTop ice cream.

Greek Yogurt Cheesecake

Having a taste for cake or cookies, but don’t want the extra calories? Try eating a healthier version of cheesecake. Greek yogurt cheesecake is made with non-fat plain Greek yogurt and non-fat cheesecake. Use honey and dates instead of white sugar to sweeten up the slice.

Smoothies Instead of Milk Shakes

Milkshakes are very delicious but have very little nutritional value. An average milkshake has hundreds of calories. To satisfy your cravings drink smoothies instead. Smoothies have tons of health benefits and are just as delicious as milkshakes. Avocados are great for the heart because of the monounsaturated fatty acids. Smoothies are more filling than milkshakes and can even make you lose weight.

Turnip Fries

The world’s best fries are potatoes, yet these are also the most fattening. For a healthy french fry, substitute potatoes with other vegetables like carrots, sweet potatoes, and turnips. Turnip fries are non-starchy and easy to prepare. Simply cut the turnips up as you would a potato. Put them in the oven at 425 degrees for 10-15 minutes. They taste just like potato fries and much healthier.

Spicy Sun Flower Seeds & Granola

For anyone who’s a fan of spicy snacks, you need to try spicy sunflowers seeds. To avoid the extra sodium and calories from junk food, sprinkle cayenne pepper on your favorite nuts. Granola bars are healthy substitutes because they are made of natural oats and dried fruits.

Healthy eating is easier than people think; you just have to find the best substitutes.
