Did You Know Hospitality Is a Commandment?

Have you ever wondered if the way you treat people is something that matters to God? Does serving people and welcoming people in your home is something God cares about? Did you know hospitality is a commandment?

What Is Hospitality?

I would like to start by defining this word. Sometimes we miss the importance of things because we don’t know what they mean. Hospitality – the friendly and generous reception and entertainment of guests, visitors, or strangers.  The Synonym of this word is friendliness, hospitableness, warm reception, welcome, helpfulness, neighborliness, warmth, kindness, congeniality, geniality, cordiality, courtesy, amenability, generosity, entertainment, catering, food.

Now looking at all these words, we could grasp what it means to be hospitable. One of the greatest examples for me of hospitality in the Bible was when Jesus fed the five thousand in John 6:1-15.  The multitude was there hearing Jesus talk for hours and they were hungry, even the disciples were worried on how to feed so many people! But Jesus gave them specific instructions on how to treat the people and fed them when he didn’t have to. It was part of the character of Jesus. He was always treating people with kindness and making them feel welcomed.

New Commandment

The most impactful part of being hospitable is receiving people with friendliness and making them feel welcomed. When Jesus said in John 13:34-35 (MSG) Let me give you a new command: Love one another. In the same way, I loved you; you love one another. This is how everyone will recognize that you are my disciples—when they see the love you have for each other.

He was also thinking about being hospitable. See if you love your neighbor as you love yourself there will be no way that you will ever be unhospitable to them. You will always make them feel welcomed and will strive to serve them and make them feel drawn to your kindness.

Many times, we just don’t want to be bothered to deal with people. We believe that going to church, reading the Bible from time to time and just being nice is enough. These are all good things but if we look closer in the Bible we will see how being hospitable also comes from a place of humbleness and thankfulness. It is also something that we need to exercise more.

Imitating The Father

There are a lot of scriptures in the Word that speaks about hospitality. But the most important thing to understand is that in our pursuit and relationship with God we will always be received with hospitality by our God. He will never reject you or make you feel like you are wasting his time. God will welcome you with open arms and will share things with you that will encourage you and will make you come back for more.

He wants you to open yourself to Him and the people around you.  Salvation is not for you to be secretive about it, you are supposed to share and be an ambassador of Jesus Christ. You can’t do that if you don’t interact with people.  Romans 15:7 Therefore welcome one another as Christ has welcomed you, for the glory of God
