Bundling Up: Your Guide to Layering

If you’re like me, then the best thing about winter is getting to layer up in cold weather clothes. After all, a girl’s gotta stay warm, right? I love wearing sweaters, cardigans, long skirts, and bundling up in warm scarves. Plus, cold weather means that you have an excuse to wear that cute dress AND that beautiful scarf AND that trendy sweater, all at the same time. Layering is a great way to stay stylish in the winter while also staying warm. But, the art of layering can take some getting used to. Here are some tips and tricks to help you perfect your layering game this winter.

Key Basics

Having some key basics in your wardrobe will help you transition other pieces into wonderfully layered outfits. These are pieces that wear well with others and what you find yourself wearing over and over again. Some staples for me are a striped t-shirt, a black blazer, and an olive green field jacket, but you may love a cream cable-knit sweater or a chambray shirt. Keeping these options on hand will help you layer without having to put too much thought into an outfit.

Roll and Cuff

Layering is more than just throwing on a jacket over a shirt. If you want to layer with style, make sure that each layer shows through. This could mean rolling up the sleeves of your blazer over a long sleeve t-shirt or cuffing your jeans to allow your socks to peep through. Doing this adds interest and balance to the whole outfit.

Mix and Match

Mixing and matching both textiles and prints is a great way to style your layers this winter. A key to doing this is finding a balance in the color and size of the print. Pair colorful plaid with small polka dots or mix two different patterns in the same color. Adding contrast to each layer will give any outfit a stylish boost.

When it really comes down to it, learning how to layer takes trying on your clothes together and figuring out what really works. What may seem odd together on the hanger may actually look great on, and vice versa. Play around with cardigans, sweaters, and dresses to see what goes together and, most importantly, what makes you feel comfortable and confident.

We hope these tricks help you layer in style this winter! How do you love to layer? Tell us below in the comments!
