The Best Beauty Investments

You know the feeling when you’re shopping at Sephora and spot the most beautifully packaged, classic red lipstick, only to find that it’s $35.00? I sure do. Makeup can be expensive. Sure, we try to justify our need for the newest Naked palette, but if we’re completely honest with ourselves, sometimes spending our well-earned dollars on yet another neutral eyeshadow palette is pointless, impulsive, and downright wasteful. Not that there’s anything wrong with makeup. I love makeup. I think that it can be a fun way to express yourself and enhance your naturally beautiful self. But, when it comes down to it, not all makeup is worth the hefty price tag. You can find plenty of quality products at the drugstore that work just as well (and sometimes better) than the leading brands found at Sephora and Ulta. You might be a self-professed makeup junkie looking for ways to cut spending, or someone just starting out with makeup and wondering what products are actually worth the splurge. Whatever beauty background you come from, here is a list of some of the best beauty investments actually worth spending a little extra money on.

Brushes

You wouldn’t paint a masterpiece with a Q-tip, so why would you apply your makeup with inadequate tools? Investing in a set of brushes is key to applying your makeup flawlessly. The good news is, not all quality makeup brushes have to be break-the-bank expensive. Of course, you can go all out and purchase the full line of Mac brushes, but there are plenty of cheaper options that are still just as nice. I love using brushes from Sigma, Sonia Kashuk, and even e.l.f. cosmetics, all of which are reasonably affordable (e.l.f. brushes start at $1.00. You can’t beat that). And, you can often buy sets that provide you with all the tools you need for a full face of makeup. With proper upkeep, nice brushes will last you a long time, so they’re worth the one-time expense. Whether you just need the essentials, or are looking for ways to hone your makeup skills and have more precise application, cosmetic brushes are an essential beauty investment.

Complexion

In my opinion, it is a better to invest in products for your face than anything else. I’m talking skincare, foundation, primer, and setting powders. Investing in quality skincare and face makeup will not only help your complexion, but it will help all other makeup go on smoother and look more flawless. Find a skincare routine that works for you–don’t just buy the cheapest option and hope for the best. Of course, the drugstore has plenty of great skincare products, but you still want to make sure you’re buying something that’s good for your skin and will actually work. A site I like to use is Paula’s Choice’s Beautypedia. You can look up thousands of skincare and makeup products to find scientific and medical reviews on how the ingredients and formulations of products actually work on the skin. Doing a little research will help you make more informed skincare decisions.

When it comes to face makeup, again, it’s important to find products that work for you. A nice primer will help prep your skin for makeup and help it last longer. Quality foundation, concealer, and powder will give you a base for the rest of your makeup, and help everything blend out and apply more evenly. My opinion is that, if you are going to splurge on any kind of makeup, it’s better to invest in some strong complexion products, rather than, say, a blush or mascara. Most foundations will last you a long time and, if it’s something you’re going to use everyday, it will be worth the investment in the long run.

One Lipstick

I’m not saying you shouldn’t have more than one lipstick, but if you’re in a position to splurge on a product, or if you just want to buy something nice for yourself, investing in one, go-to lipstick is a good idea. Now, I love lipstick. It’s probably my favorite type of makeup. But, for most people, lipstick is probably not an everyday essential. Or, maybe you work and it’s not appropriate for you to wear a vampy lip or a bright red on a day-to-day basis. I get it. But, lipstick is perfect for date nights and special occasions. That’s why I think it’s worth it to invest in a quality lip color that suits you and makes you feel fancy from time to time. Or, invest in an everyday color that you will get a lot of use out of. Having one nice lipstick on hand is a great beauty investment that will be reliable for long-lasting wear and a beautiful finish.

Fragrance

We all like to smell nice. That’s why it’s worth it to invest (or, get someone else to invest for you) in a nice perfume that will last you a long time. I’m sure we’ve all been through the Calgon phase, but investing in an eau de parfum or an eau de toilette will give you fragrance that lasts throughout the day. And, there’s just something special about spritzing a perfume on before a big event or a night out. Finding a scent you love gives you something personal, something that makes you feel just a hint more glamorous. As Christian Dior put it, “a woman’s perfume tells more about her than her handwriting.” Plus, the bottles are much prettier. Though most perfumes are expensive, they are worth the investment for the lasting power, the value, and the elegance.

When it comes to spending money on beauty, it’s important to remember that everyone is different. We all have different concerns, preferences, and interests when it comes to beauty. Invest in the products you feel comfortable with and don’t feel pressured to buy something you don’t like or don’t see yourself using or needing. And, most importantly, know that anything you put on your face (or don’t put on) will not make you more or less beautiful than you already are!
