2016 Movie Trailers

2015 was a great year for the movies. From summer blockbusters, like Marvel’s “Ant-Man” and Disney-Pixar’s “Inside Out,” to the long-awaited release of “Star Wars: The Force Awakens,” our entertainment expectations were exceeded. But, as the year comes to a close, it’s time to gear up for all of the cinematic goodies in store for 2016. Here are some of the hottest movie trailers that have us excited for what’s on the horizon in 2016.

The Revenant

In theaters: January 8, 2016

Here is a much-anticipated film for Oscar lovers (like myself) and history buffs alike. Set in the frontier days of America, Hugh Glass, played by Leonardo DiCaprio (“The Wolf of Wall Street”), must fight to survive after a brutal bear mauling. As if that plot wasn’t enticing enough, DiCaprio has already been nominated for a Golden Globe and a Screen Actors Guild Award. Could this be the year that good ole’ Leo finally wins his ever-elusive Oscar? The odds are looking good. The film is also directed by last year’s Best Director, Alejandro González Iñárritu (“Birdman”), so be sure to expect an overall stunning picture.

Zoolander 2

In theaters: February 12, 2016

Yes, this is happening. After fifteen years, we are finally getting a sequel to “Zoolander.” Directed by and starring Ben Stiller, prepare to jump back into the shoes of runway model, Derek Zoolander, and enjoy the shenanigans that are sure to come. What else can you expect? Benedict Cumberbatch (“The Imitation Game”), Justin Bieber, Kim Kardashian West, and, wait for it, Macaulay Culkin! Now the only question is are you going to the premiere with a Blue Steel or a Magnum?

The Jungle Book

In theaters: April 15, 2016

We all know and love the animated Disney version, but this film is sure to take the classic Rudyard Kipling novel to the next level. Directed by Jon Favreau of “Iron Man” fame, this new adaptation is what seems to be the next installment in the live-action takeover of Disney’s animated classics. And, after the success of “Cinderella,” and with a voice cast that includes Lupita Nyong’o (“12 Years a Slave”), Scarlett Johansson (“The Avengers”), Idris Elba (“Beasts of No Nation”), and Bill Murray (“St. Vincent”), this movie is sure to deliver. Or it will at least meet the bare necessities of our expectations (Sorry. I couldn’t resist).

Captain America: Civil War

In theaters: May 6, 2016

The Marvel Cinematic Universe has established itself as one of biggest movie franchises, and every year we look forward to the blockbusters to come from it. This year is especially exciting because “Captain America: Civil War” launches the next phase of MCU films and serves to move the franchise forward. We’ll see Bucky Barnes (a.k.a. Winter Solider) back on the scene, as well as the growing tension between Captain America, Iron Man, and the other Avengers as the government attempts to enforce regulation on superheroes. But the most anticipated moment in the film? The first look at Marvel’s new Spider-Man, played by Tom Holland. After a battle with Sony for the rights to Marvel’s most popular superhero, we finally get to see Spidey in action in the MCU.

Finding Dory

Video: Pixar Animation Studios

In theaters: June 17, 2016

Now, I’ll be the first to say I was a little bummed to hear that Pixar was making a “Finding Nemo” sequel. I stand by my belief that “Finding Nemo” is Pixar’s best film, and I always thought making a sequel would somehow diminish the magic of the original. But, after watching the trailer, I confess that I’m excited to go see this. It’s been thirteen years since we’ve seen Nemo, Marlin, Dory, and the fish tank gang, so it will be fun to plunge back into their world. And this time we get to follow Dory, reprised by Ellen DeGeneres, as she goes on a quest to find her family. Pixar always has a way of tugging at our heartstrings, so prepare for laughs and tears when you head to the theaters this summer.

Suicide Squad

Video: DC Entertainment

In theaters: August 5, 2016

In a darker comic book story, “Suicide Squad” follows a group of supervillains rounded up by the secret organization, A.R.G.U.S., and sent out to execute black ops missions. You may be familiar with this team if you’re a fan of The CW’s “Arrow,” but in this movie we’ll see A.R.G.U.S. leader, Amanda Waller, played by Emmy winner Viola Davis (“How to Get Away With Murder”) and Deadshot played by Will Smith (“Concussion”). There are many stars in this film, but I’m most excited to see how Jared Leto (“Dallas Buyer’s Club”) fills the large shoes left by Heath Ledger for his rendition of the Joker. I’m eager to find out if Leto’s performance stands up to the hype, but, regardless, this movie is sure to send chills up your spine and leave you with a new appreciation for the supervillains.

Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them

Video: Warner Bros.

In theaters: November 18, 2016

Of course, no list of 2016 movie trailers would be complete without mentioning J.K. Rowling’s gift to us. That’s right. In just a few short months, we will be transported back to the wizarding world we fell in love with through “Harry Potter.” Directed by David Yates, who directed the last four “Harry Potter” movies, this story will follow magizoologist Newt Scamander, played by Eddie Redmayne (“The Danish Girl”), and his experiences that lead him to write the textbook Harry, Ron, and Hermione eventually read at Hogwarts. We’ll get to see the wizarding world expanded into 1920’s New York City, where Scamander must track down magical beasts after they escape from his enchanted briefcase. I have high hopes for this movie and am excited to see where Rowling takes us next.
